Graphic design :
from concept to space,
from the object to the process,
from personal to collective,
from loneliness to fun !

Quest : personal graphic object in public space
Investigating public space alone, leaving a treasure in kit : to read the 800 meters grafiti you need to take a boat in a dark underground water tunnel, the meaning of the grafiti is the reward.

800m meters grafiti in Islington water tunnel, Central Saint Martins, London 2003.

1. build a raft
2. sail on London's canals
3. find a secret place : an underground aquatic tunnel
4. paint the letters Q _U_E_S_T, one letter every 150 meters and a continuous line so visitors can follow the trace with a torch in the darkness

Pharaon : collective graphic objects in public space
Advertising for ancient Egyptian culture exhibition in Paris subway. Group grafiti attack to make ephemeral giant golden Egyptian stencils.

4x3meters, 16 golden stencils posters with midi6.com in the tube station Pyramide, Paris 2005

1. client contacts us for advertising
2. we associate the pharaonic archeologic researches as the action to going underground
3. we create hieroglyphic stickers and organise flash group giant painting actions

Human Experience : participative installation
I wanted to involve everyone to produce a universal illustration of sensations and paint what human culture can be. I built a place where people use simple drawings to express their feelings, sensations in space. Every human can uderstand these stories. It is something collective, primitive and so enjoyable.

12m L, 4m l, 5m H, wood, paper, glue, ink, Central Saint Martins, London 2004.

1. build a structure which architecture is a mixture of a stomac, a temple and an anthill
2. play loud hypnotic music to attract
3. invite people inside
4. touch them, make them stop breathing, close their eyes, spin, stand on one leg, walk and most of all : ask them to paint their own personal sensations, physical memories and stories directly on the walls after being physically prepared

Cesar Harada Galery : individually controlled space powered by the community
in progress

I was given a place to remodel. I destroyed everything and now I want to build this house like a computer in its structure, modulary and efficient. I blog the images of the work in progress on an inventors forum, and I plan according to the feedbacks and comments. My individual construction is powered by the community of inventors.

30m2 in Paris to remodel (maconnery, carpentry, electricity, plumbery...). 6x5x4m white cube on the gound floor. On instructables.com

_ post continuously the images of the construction on the forum
1. get a place, destroy everything, build stable basis
2. from the comments, draw ideas, ask for feedbacks
3. build, invite people to help you.
4. repeat the process

Self-select : identity swapping, individuality and universality
in progress

With the artist-fashion designer Yoshinari Nishio, we exchange our clothes with people in the streets of Paris in a mobile cabin. We swap our identities, exchange our "skins" with random people. The artist desires to become universal, be himself and everyone at the same time. We consider fashion not as art but as media, pure communication. The work is the action, the clothes and the image.

10 days of performances with Parisian in the streets, many photos, an exhibition, many books.

_continuously document the process
1. build a mobile fabric cabin
2. go in the streets
3. meet people and swap clothes with them

New Media Arts Wikiversity : collective art-design experiment
in progress

Wikipedia is an open encyclopedia. In the very new division of New Media Arts of the Wikiversity we challenge definitions and experiment in the new media area. We are trying to build the architecture of a university in which everyone can contribute, accumulate and create knowledge together beyond teacher - student relations boundaries.

http://www.wikiversity.org/ , english, school of humanities, school of art and design, started on 19 june 2007

1. log into wikipedia
2. learn, teach, share
power to people

from concept to space :
"Quest" is taking graphic design into space with mistery and adventure for both the designer and the public.
from the object to the process :
"Pharaon" is a goup initiative to take graphic design under alternative activist aesthetics to promote traditional official culture.
from personal to collective :
"Human experience" is making a participative installation, so everyone contributes by their presence and graphic improvisation.
"Cesar Harada Galery" is about opening the design capabilities to a community of inventors but remaining individually on control on the "real" construction.
from loneliness to fun !

"Self Select" is dissolving the identity of one person in the group, and getting the individual existence paradoxally louder.
"New Media arts Wikiversity" is sharing and embodying knowledge as an experimental mass.

In the beginning, I saw graphic design as an object that could go from an individual creating a drawing to collaborative exquisite corpses. After time, I started to think about graphic design spacially, for example : animated typography, city signs, architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture. When you expand within your mind the possibilties of graphic design and furthermore practice those ideas, as a designer, you need to worry about how the viewer will be living with your work, thus creating numerous questions. Graphic design will then become not an object, but a process. Instead of designing FOR the people, you should want to design WITH the people ! The roles played by both client and designer do not have to be seperate ; this can be changed into a collaboration. Often times, the difference between the client and the designer’s dreams have difficulty understanding each other. Instead, the artist-designer should OPEN the art-design work and let the community appropriate and co-create the work. The value of design has moved from the object itself to the experience of the object. Being creative is neither a job nor a social status. It is a human capability. Interactive design can be graphic, spacial, musical, choreographic, etc. The strategy of allowing the user to participate and create a unique, intimate relation with the artefact guarantees success. Emerging countries will gain an immense amount of satisfaction, if they are able to create enthusiasm within a collective, which consists of an open, creative, and productive process.
